Meet Your Accredited Exercise Physiologist: Jonathan Reeves

“I've worked with hundreds of women just like you over the last 7 years. Women who thought osteoporosis meant the end of their independence. Women who were terrified of breaking something. And I've watched them come back stronger, steadier, and able to do the things they thought were gone for good.

Over those seven years, I've learned exactly what works and what doesn't for women with bone density challenges. Most start afraid of loading. I show you how to use real resistance safely, so you actually build the strength you need. “

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor in Clinical Exercise Physiology

  • Bachelor in Exercise Science

What’s Included in the 8- Week Program?

Eight weeks of one-on-one coaching from a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (1 session of 60 minutes, or 2 sessions of 30 minutes per week - your choice)

Master "Functional Loading" Safely: Learn the exact techniques to deadlift (the key to picking up heavy groceries) and squat (the key to getting up from a chair easily) using the evidence-based methods from the LIFTMOR trial.

A Road map for the Future: You’ll receive a personalised, written program with your exact weights and progressions. By the end of the 8 weeks, you won't just be stronger, you'll have the confidence to keep training safely on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The program is designed of the ground breaking LIFTMOR study which was completed right here in Queensland. This study compared heavy resistance training (squats, deadlifts, overhead press and jumping) to the “usual” care model. Needless to say the participants doing the heavy resistance training had far better results.

  • Key Benefits of Heavy Strength Training:

Lumbar Spine BMD: Increased 2.9% to 4%.

    Femoral Neck BMD: Increase0.3%

Physical Stature: Increased height 0.2 cm

Functional Power: Significant gains in leg strength & vertical jump

Balance/Stability: Improved "Timed Up and Go" (TUG) scores

What about the participants receiving “usual care” ?

Basically there results either DECREASED or didn’t change at all.

  • 8 months was the study duration where they trained twice per week for 30 mins each session.

  • Absolutely, in fact the LIFTMOR study proved this. Over the 8 month program, there was only one complaint of back pain which resulted in only 2 missed exercise sessions. No fractures were reported.

  • In my experience 8 weeks seems to be around the time needed for someone to learn how to safely do the exercises and get comfortable lifting the heavier loads required for strength and bone health development.

  • To get the best results, it is advised you continue to use the program you have learnt well past the 8 weeks, ideally by yourself for the rest of your life. However after the 8 week program, if you would like further supervised sessions we can accommodate this as well.

  • Yes absolutely, you will just need to check with your insurer to see if they cover exercise physiology and what percentage of the session cost it will cover.

  • No worries! the program duration can be modified to 4 weeks. Alternatively, session length can be adjusted to only 1 X 30 minute session per week.

  • Yes, strength training is actually very good at managing the symptoms of arthritis. If you can not tolerate the exact exercises used in the LIFTMOR trial, then modifications can be made.

  • Absolutely, the 8 week program is designed to take you from an absolute beginner to pro.

  • If you do not have the equipment used during the program at home, then yes, I advise getting a membership somewhere close to your home, OR investing in a home gym.

  • In most cases no. To get stronger bones and a stronger body, you will likely need significantly heavier weights than that.
